Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Microbiome Project by Platinum Health®?

The mission of this project is to contribute to the advancement and understanding of the role of the gut microbiome in equine health. By sequencing the gut microbiome of horses from across North America and measuring the types and amounts of microbes found, correlations in equine health can be analyzed and potential treatments can be studied.

What types of cases do we want?

We are looking for a diverse group of healthy horses as well as horses with challenging health conditions such as (but not limited to):

  • Healthy Horses
  • Athletic Horses
  • Senior Horses
  • Pregnant Mares
  • Foals
  • Overweight Horses
  • Underweight Horses
  • Gastric / Hindgut Ulcers
  • Chronic Colic
  • Chronic Diarrhea
  • Tendon / Ligament Injury
  • Metabolic Disease
  • Laminitis
  • Joint Conditions

Does it cost me anything?

For a limited time, we are accepting select horses across North America at no cost to help grow the library of sequenced horses in the project.

What can I expect?

Horses will be chosen based on the need for the type of health case they represent and the current health diversity of the other horses in the project. After you enroll your horse, we will let you know if it has been selected for complimentary participation.

What happens after I send back my kit?

After your horse’s sample has been received, it will take some time to sequence the DNA, and analyze the results. We will notify you with the results when they are ready. The results will include top phyla-level (names of bacteria), quantity, and diversity of the microbes. Later in the project, you will be able to compare your horse's results to the aggregated results of all horses in the study.

Will it help diagnose disease?

The Platinum Health® Microbiome kit is not a diagnostic tool; it is designed for research and providing information on what types of bacteria are present in a horse’s gut.

Are kits available to international horse owners?

At this time, we are focusing and providing kits only to horse owners in North America.

How long does my kit last?

We encourage owners to return their kits within 2 business days of collecting sample, and within 30 days of receiving the kit.
